ROAD CLOSURES/RE-OPENINGS
The event route will necessitate full and partial closures on major arterial roads and local roads in the vicinity of the route. The majority of road closures are expected to be installed between 7:00am and 8:00am and each road will re-open throughout the morning at predetermined times.
Predetermined ‘cut-off’ times will be allocated to various points along the course. If participants have not reached these points by the assigned time they will directed to move to the footpath to ensure the roads can be reopened to vehicular traffic at the specified time.

PARTIAL ROAD CLOSURES
The implementation of partial road closures treatments will be provided on the following roads:
Queens Bridge Street
The proposed route utilises the eastern (southbound) carriageway of Queens Bridge Street. Northbound traffic on Queens Bridge Street will be permitted for local access. If required, trams will be able to continue to operate along Queens Bridge Street in both directions throughout the event, noting that trams will be unable to cross City Road.
Flinders Street
The proposed route utilises the southern (westbound) carriageway of Flinders Street. Eastbound traffic on Flinders Street would be unaffected and would continue to operate under normal conditions. It is also expected that tram services would also continue to operate along Flinders Street.
Domain Road
The proposed route utilises the northern (eastbound) carriageway of Domain Road between Park Street and Anderson Street. Westbound traffic on Domain Road between Park Street and Anderson Street would be unaffected and would continue to operate under normal conditions.
Anderson Street
Southbound traffic will be permitted on Anderson Street to provide vehicle access to adjacent properties and St Leonards Court and Fairlie Court. Runners will utilise the existing northbound carriageway with vehicles and runners separated by bollards. Anderson Street will only be accessible to local traffic and will be subject to a 40km/h speed limit for the duration of the event.
Alexandra Avenue
It is proposed to use one and a half of the westbound traffic lanes for the running course. Alexandra Avenue will operate with one traffic lane in each direction between Southgate Avenue and Swan Street.
Runners will be allocated one and a half of the westbound lanes and will be separated from a vacant lane by pedestrian fencing. It is also proposed that traffic on Alexandra Avenue will be subject to a 40km/h speed limit for the duration of the changed traffic conditions.
Fitzroy Street
The proposed route utilises the eastbound traffic lanes (outbound from St Kilda) between 8:00am and 11:30am. Eastbound traffic and tram movements in each direction will remain ‘live’ throughout the event. Pedestrian fencing will be installed between the runners and the trams on Fitzroy Street.
Major Traffic Diversions
Eastbound – City Road
The Montague Street onramp to the West Gate Freeway has recently been closed as part of the M1 upgrade works. The current detour route to access the M1 comprises City Road between Clarendon Street and Power Street which will be closed between approximately 8:00am and 9:30am to enable the runners to cross City Road.
It is proposed that during the above times, vehicles destined to the M1 (eastbound) from Montague Street, undertake the following detour:
- Turn left into Normanby Road (existing arrangement)
- Turn left into Clarendon Street
- Turn right into Flinders Street
- Turn right into Kings Way, and
- Turn left onto the M1.
Variable message boards will be in position in Lorimer Street and Wurundjeri Way to advise motorists of the City Road closure. This will enable motorists to access Flinders Street directly from Wurundjeri Way rather than looping around Normanby Street and Clarendon Street.
The above detour will only be required between 8:00am and 9:30am when the intersection of City Road and Queens Bridge Street is re-opened.
Westbound – City Road
Vehicles on City Road will be required wishing to travel further west will be required to undertake the following detour:
- Turn left into Power Street
- Turn right onto the West Gate Freeway on ramp, and
- Either continue west along the freeway or exit the freeway at the Montague Street off ramp.
The above detour will only be required between 8:00am and 9:30am when the intersection of City Road and Queens Bridge Street is re-opened.
Pedestrian and Cyclist Access
General
Given the number of runners anticipated for the event, the organisers would like to ask pedestrians and cyclists to move with care across the course.
Flinders Street Station
Pedestrians will be directed to the pedestrian underpass located on Flinders Street adjacent to Flinders Street Station at DeGraves Street, in addition to the subway at Elizabeth Street.
Signage will be provided within the station and marshals will direct pedestrians to these underpasses from the time Flinders Street and Swanson Street are closed. Marshals will be located at both sites to aid pedestrian movements. Pedestrian fencing will be erected around the station to assist pedestrian safety during the event.
Marshals will also be located at the intersection of Flinders Street and Swanston Street to assist with pedestrian movements before and after the ‘Great Australian Run’ participants have passed through this area, and wherever it is safe to cross during the race.
Disabled access to and from Flinders Street station during the event is proposed, as follows:
- Exit via the rear of the station (Yarra River side)
- Head east along the Yarra River path under Princes Bridge, and
- Up the Princes Bridge ramp to St Kilda Road/Swanston Street.
St Kilda Road
Pedestrian movements at each of signalised intersection along St Kilda Road will be supervised by Marshalls throughout the event.
Car Parking On Route
Where feasible, it is proposed to limit the amount of on-street car parking along the length of the route. Naturally, retention of on-street car parking along the route raises the potential risk of drivers moving cars on a ‘closed route’.
It is proposed to minimise the number of vehicles parked on the St Kilda Road northbound service road, Birdwood Avenue and Alexandra Avenue (between Anderson Street and Swan Street bridge) by closing these roads at approximately 4:00am and as such, limiting the opportunities for motorists to park on these roads by installing ‘No Parking’ signs at key locations along the route.

There is NO parking available within Albert Park
There is only limited parking available in the immediate area around Albert Park.
Parking is available in the Wilsons car park on Queens Lane just off Lorne St. There are 500 spaces available on a first come first served basis. This car park will be available from 0600.
There are a number of major roads being closed for the event. Access to this car park should be as follows:
- - From the North – Kingsway joining Queens Rd
- - From the South – Dandenong Rd joining Queens Rd
- - From the East – Toorak Rd crossing St Kilda Rd and turning left into Queens Rd
After 0800 runners will NOT be able to access this car park due to the road closures in place.
We would like to thank Wilson car parks for supporting the HBA Great Australian Run 2008. Wilson are Australia’s largest parking operator, delivering comprehensive management and operational services.
- Patron enters car park and presses button on entry column/post to receive ticket, once ticket is received boom arm lifts and allows access.
- Patron takes ticket and parks in an allocated bay – 600 St Kilda Road has 6 levels so there are around 560 bays available
- On exiting the car park, patron feeds ticket into exit column/post, ticket will lift the boom and allow patron to exit
