I was initially hesitant to enter as I was unsure of my ability - I got excellent advice and encouragement from the organisers when I emailed for info. I then encouraged my new daughter-in-law to join me - we found the experience excellent, uplifting, exhilarating.

Special access arrangements

Carousel Restaurant

Vehicle access to the Carrousel restaurant will be restricted to varying levels between 8:00am and 11:00am.  From approximately 8:00am til 10:30am there will be no vehicle access on Aughtie Drive between Albert Road and Ross Gregory Drive.  Between 10:30am and approximately 11:00am the Carousel restaurant will be accessible from Aughtie Drive, however, access will be restricted to the northern one-lane ingress crossover only as participants in the family run will be utilising the southern egress crossover.  As such, access in and out of the restaurant will be controlled by a traffic controller.

Lakeside Car Park

Vehicle access to the Lakeside car park will not be permitted between 8:00am and 10:30am, whilst restricted access arrangements to the car park will be provided prior to the event on Saturday from the Friday evening before and between the Saturday and Sunday events.  The pedestrian fencing required to guide runners along the route will be installed late on the Friday evening prior to the Saturday morning, with the ends of the pedestrian section ‘locked down’ such that vehicles are unable to access the closed off section of road.  A gap in the fencing will be provided to allow east-west access into the Bob Jane car park from Aughtie Drive.  The arrangements are similar to those implemented in the car park prior to and after the running of the Grand Prix.

Golf Driving Range / MSAC

Access to the Golf Driving and MSAC will be restricted to the access point from the Albert Road / Cecil Street intersection between 8:00am and 10:30am.

Albert Park Golf Course

Vehicle access to the Albert Park Golf Course from Lakeside Drive will not be permitted between 8:00am and 11:00am.  Vehicle access to the Golf Course will be restricted to left in and left access to Queens Road throughout this period.

Powerhouse Rowing Club

Vehicle access to the Powerhouse Rowing Club car park will not be permitted between 8:00am and 11:00am.  Alternate car parking/access arrangements will be required for users of this car park throughout this period.

ROAD CLOSURES - SUNDAY

The majority of road closures are expected to be installed from 5:00am, with major thoroughfares to remain open until 8:00am, namely:

In addition to the above roads, major east-west streets across Moray Street will remain open as long as possible prior to the event (i.e. 8:00am) and be re-opened as soon as possible after the event has passed (i.e. 9:15am). The following table lists all road closures and reopenings.

Major Traffic Diversions

M1 Upgrade

Up until 9:00am, eastbound traffic on the West Gate Freeway will be forced to exit the Freeway at either Kings Way or Montague Street. The recommended detour routes for vehicles wanting to access the City or continue eastbound from the West Gate Freeway are discussed below.

Eastbound – City Road / West Gate Freeway

Vehicles wishing to travel eastbound from the West Gate Freeway and the Port Melbourne area whilst City Road is closed between 8:00am and 9:45am and the Freeway closed up until 9:00am will be required to undertake one of the following detours:

  • Vehicles accessing the city from the West Gate Freeway should exit at Montague Street and access the City from Wrundjeri Way.
  • Vehicles accessing the eastern suburbs and beyond should exit the West Gate Freeway at Kings Way and continue onto Queens Road and onto Dandenong Road under St Kilda Junction.

After 9:00am vehicles will be able to utilise the West Gate Freeway east of Kings Way. Access to the Freeway (eastbound) from City Road will be provided from 10:00am.  Whilst after 9:45am City Road will be re-opened at Queens Bridge Street, noting that between Sturt Street and Swan Street Bridge, City Road will be reduced to one traffic lane in each direction.

All other vehicles on City Road west of Moray Street will be detoured to the north along Clarendon Street or Queens Bridge Street.

Westbound – City Road

Vehicles on City Road wishing to travel further west will be required to undertake the following detour:

  • turn left into Power Street
  • turn right onto the West Gate Freeway on ramp
  • either continue west along the freeway or exit the freeway at the Montague Street off ramp.

The above detour will only be required between 8:00am and 9:45am at which time the intersection of City Road and Queens Bridge Street is re-opened.

Pedestrian and Cyclist Access

General

Given the number of runners anticipated for the event, pedestrian and cyclist movements across the course is discouraged during peak runner periods where possible.

Flinders Street Station

Pedestrians will be directed to the pedestrian underpass located on Flinders Street adjacent to Flinders Street Station at Degraves Street (currently controlled by the City of Melbourne), in addition to the subway at Elizabeth Street.

Signage will be provided within the station and marshals will direct pedestrians to these underpasses from the time Flinders Street and Swanson Street are closed.  Marshals will be located at both sites to aid pedestrian movements. Pedestrian fencing will be erected around the station to deter pedestrians from attempting to cross Flinders Street and Swanston streets during the event.

Marshals will also be located at the intersection of Flinders Street and Swanston Street to assist with pedestrian movements before and after the ‘Great Australian Run’ participants have passed through this area, and wherever it is safe to cross during the race.

Disabled access to and from Flinders Street station during the event is proposed, as follows:

  • exit via the rear of the station(Yarra River side)
  • head east along the Yarra River path under Princes Bridge
  • up the Princes Bridge ramp to St Kilda Road/Swanston Street.

The above path should be well signposted and marshalled.
