I'm from the US and I used to regularly run a 25,000 strong race in my hometown, and I considered that the best-put-together fun run I've ever done. I judge everything else against it. I feel the Great Australian Run was equal with that experience.

Calling all footy fans...10/09/09

Footy fans will go into battle for their Club in the Great Australian Run on 29th November 2009, with a unique challenge set to decide the Club with the Fittest Footy Fans in the league.

By selecting your favourite AFL team when you enter online at www.greataustralianrun.com.au, you register to run for your favourite AFL Club. The first 30 male and female finishers for each club will have their times averaged to determine the team with the fittest fans.

Prizes, including a $75 gift voucher from adidas, will be awarded to these 60 runners from the winning team.

Last year Collingwood captured the premiership victory, edging out fans running for Carlton, Essendon and Hawthorn, with just 25 seconds separating the top four teams.

Some of the players getting a head start in this year’s challenge include Essendon’s Jobe Watson, Collingwood’s John Anthony and the Kangaroos’ Michael Firrito. The players are set to lead their respective Club teams on event day in an attempt to ensure the Magpie’s don’t claim back to back flags.

In the process the players will be supporting a great cause. Entrants in the Great Australian Run can choose to raise funds for any charity of their choice via the Everyday Heroes website, with the footballers getting behind The Humour Foundation.

The Humour Foundation’s core project is the Clown Doctors. Clown Doctors treat kids in hospital with a different kind of medicine, with doses of smiles and laughter. By parodying the hospital routine, the Clown Doctors help children feel less traumatised by medical procedures. Oversized medical equipment, 'red-nose' transplants, 'cat' scans, humour checks and funny bone examinations are all part of the fun. By exaggerating intimidating jargon and procedures, fear and anxiety are reduced.

The Great Australian Run is part of the world’s biggest mass participation running programme. Entries are now open - visit www.greataustralianrun.com.au

Your club may not take home the Premiership Cup in 2009, but you could be part of the team that ensures it has the Fittest Footy Fans in the League on 29th November.
